Godparent/Sponsor Prep

So, you’ve been asked to be a Godparent for someone getting baptized or a sponsor for someone making their Confirmation.
What do you do now?

Obtain a Sacramental Sponsorship Certificate from your residing parish. To do this, you must review and affirm the following:

GODPARENTS & SPONSORS FOR CONFIRMATION MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
  • MUST NOT BE The parents of the child being baptized, however, the child’s Grandparents are eligible (if they meet all the other requirements).
  • MUST BE at least 16 years old.
  • MUST BE a practicing Catholic AND be fully initiated into the Catholic church by having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion. A practicing Catholic implies that they attend Sunday Mass and they participate regularly in receiving the Eucharist and Reconciliation sacraments. An unbaptized or non-Catholic may not be a godparent for Baptism.
  • Be leading a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken; therefore, if married, marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church. If they are married civilly or in another Christian tradition, they are not eligible to serve as a godparent until their marriage is recognized. If single, must be striving to live a chaste life and therefore cannot be living with a person outside of marriage.
